Organizing and Controling Children's Books

If you find that bookshelves are just not working for your kids, try storing their books in an open basket or container. This makes it easy for kids to flip through and easily find a book they want. This also makes returning books simple.

As you can see from my picture, this system also puts a limit on the number of books. I rotate my children's books and store the others in their closets in containers. When we pull out a new selections of books, they love looking at the "new" ones all over again.

Less stuff out means less stuff to clean-up!

I have to say, my youngest's bookcase is actually organized and neat. Why she can't do that with anything else in her room, I don't know. But I'll take what I can get.

I like this! We have the bookcase from hell and our 3 year-old delights in emptying it on a regular basis. It would be easier to create a "family reading zone" with baskets than with big clunky bookcases too. Great tip!

I thought I'd be the first to say that my daughter's bookcase is just perfect, but CJ beat me to it. Oh well, ours is perect not just neat :)

I've taught her to respect books, so they are always put away the right way. No worrries there, for once!

Very nice! do you sort your books in any particular way to bring out? Theme or something?

That's a good idea. I'm at the point where I will try anything. With 7 kids and my oldest being 11, we've got sooo many kids books! Their books could fill many bookshelves, and the ones that are stored on a bookshelf keep getting knocked down in the hallway by our toddler. The others are stored in bedrooms, where they tend to get ripped and that bothers me too. I've just recently been wracking my brain to figure out what to do with the book dilemma. Thanks for the tip!

Dairy Queen,
I do not have system to books I bring out except for the Holidays (I keep those books together in one of the containers in the closet).

Elizabeth, It sounds like it might be helpful for you to try limiting the number of books that are out and about in the bedrooms. The systems probably will change, too as the kids get older. Thanks for stopping by!
